I came across a pretty phenomenal dataset1 the other day. I used the data for Georgia legislators to create the two visuals you see below. I highly recommend reading the associated paper, "The Ideological Mapping of American Legislatures."
I've yet to discover an effectiveness score for state legislatures similar to the one produced on Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking. I would be interested to see how effectiveness correlates with ideology score. My guess is higher/lower scores = less effective.
